An experimental artificial intelligence system guided a drone that killed three Ukrainian civilians, according to a report by The New York Times. The findings are based on assessments from drone experts, Ukrainian military commanders, and a forensic team that analyzed wreckage from the strike and other similar incidents in the city.

While human operators programmed the drone to travel toward a specific gas station, the AI system took control of the final targeting process. Once the drone reached the vicinity of the location, it independently chose its exact targets, which were most likely propane tanks.

The Rise of Autonomous Weaponry

The incident is part of a broader trend of unmanned systems being integrated into modern warfare. In the United States, the military has been using experimental aircraft to develop machines capable of engaging in aerial combat with minimal human intervention. These systems rely on onboard software rather than a human pilot or remote control to manage flight and engagement.

In the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, both nations have increasingly relied on unmanned systems for reconnaissance and strikes. Ukraine has specifically become a testing ground for these advanced drone technologies.

Confirmed 'Terminator Mode' Strikes

Separate from the strike on civilians, Ukrainian drone manufacturer Alexander Kokhanovskyy has confirmed the use of fully autonomous drones against Russian military targets. Kokhanovskyy stated that approximately two years ago, 10 AI-controlled drones were deployed on the eastern front.

These drones operated in what was described as "Terminator mode," where they were launched without human oversight to fly between 3 and 5 kilometers over approximately 10 minutes. Once in this mode, the AI model independently searched for, identified, and intercepted targets.

Kokhanovskyy noted that the casualties from this specific test included "a couple of soldiers, one truck". He described the operation as a test and stated, "We never implemented it [more widely]". While no footage captured the strikes, investigators concluded the autonomous drones were responsible for the deaths and destruction.

Implications for Warfare

The use of these systems marks a threshold in military history, as it represents the first confirmed accounts of fully autonomous drones killing humans in military operations. In these instances, the AI decided the outcome of human life or death without final human approval.
