Mark Parrington of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts noted that while wildfires typically occur in the region between August and October, they are significantly more intense during El Niño years.
The resulting fires have led to severe air quality degradation. Thick smog is currently blanketing areas such as Palangkaraya, the capital of Indonesia’s Central Kalimantan in Borneo. Parrington added that the fire emissions estimated for this time of year are comparable to previous major El Niño events.

The current trend has drawn comparisons to 2019, one of Indonesia's worst fire seasons, during which as much as 7.7 million acres of land burned. The region also faces the memory of the 2015 "Godzilla El Niño," which brought a prolonged dry season and toxic haze that traveled to neighboring Malaysia and Singapore. That specific crisis resulted in more than half a million respiratory infections.
Government Response and Prevention
To avoid a repeat of previous transboundary haze crises, the Indonesian government is prioritizing fire control in border regions. Deputy Forestry Minister Rohmat Marzuki stated that the government is focusing early warning systems, patrols, and hotspot monitoring in specific priority areas, including West Kalimantan, Riau, and the Riau Islands.
