Cancer Research UK has identified excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light as a contributing factor to the rise in cases. This exposure occurs through both natural sunlight and the use of sunbeds.

Analysis indicates that women are more likely to be diagnosed with melanoma at younger ages. This trend is attributed to higher levels of sun exposure among women, specifically citing the use of sunbeds and sunbathing.

Warning Signs and Public Health Alerts

In response to the record-high figures, a sun safety warning was issued ahead of a bank holiday. The warning emphasizes the importance of protection against UV radiation to mitigate the risk of developing the disease.

Medical guidance on the identification of melanoma notes that the first sign of the disease is frequently a mole that undergoes changes in color, shape, or size. Other warning signs include irregular borders and variations in the color of the mole.
